Important Dates in NOVEMBER:
MATH: We are finishing up Topic 2: Understanding Subtraction this week. Our test will be on Friday.
SCIENCE: Students are exploring all of the needs of plants. We will be growing some seeds in various locations to see that light & water are essential. We will also explore how water moves through a plant by feeding a celery plant dyed water. :)
Please keep practicing those sight words at home. The sooner those word lists are mastered, the sooner students are given a new list to study, and the easier reading becomes. :)
Check out the photo page to see our first & second grade leaders learning & laughing.

NEED CLASS VOLUNTEERS!
Please be cleared through ESLA's volunteer form as soon as possible.
As we've settled into a class routine, I'd love to have a pair of extra hands in the room during reading & math centers. If this is something you're interested in, the kids & I would LOVE & appreciate your time!
Daily 5 is from 9:30-11, and math is from 11:55-1.
Need volunteers especially for:
PUMPKIN WEEK- Verellen's Orchard in Romeo kindly sold a class set of pumpkins at a discounted price to my aunt. She donated them to my students, because she knows how exciting Halloween can be for kids! I am looking forward to combining that excitement with measurement (math) & reading ("How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?"). Currently, students are working on their class behavior to earn pumpkin week. Pumpkin week will begin Monday, October 10th - that Friday. By the end of the week, each student should be able to bring home their decorated pumpkin! :)
*Green notes went home last week regarding the THANKSGIVING FEAST - our grade is responsible for supplying the canned pumpkin & evaporated milk.

Thursday, 9/22 from 4-5 PM is Open House! Come see what room 105 is all about! :)
Social Studies
In celebration of Constitution Day (September 17th), we created booklets. Students learned that the constitution is like a rule book for the USA. We compared the constitution to our classroom agreement. We all signed the agreement stating that we are in school to learn, be helpful, kind, & build leadership qualities.
Reading
This week, the read aloud book was Mercer Mayer's "I Was So Mad". We practiced reading strategies such as connecting to the text (Little Critter was so mad, write about a time you were so mad), identifying the problem and solution, making predictions, and retelling (placing images from the book in sequential order).

The First Week of School! September 6th-9th
MathI have taken this week to observe the current mathematical strengths of my class. We have counted to 100 by 10's. I can't wait until we can count by 2's & 5's too! We've counted from 1-20 & 1-50. We have written our numbers from 1-20 & 1-50. We've also put a group of 5 numbers in order from least to greatest. We are going to learn so much more!
Observe your child's number writing from 1-20. Are their numbers sometimes backwards? We focused on correcting those small errors in class this week. Practice counting to 20 at home, so they can fluently recite their numbers. Something I've been noticing is that a lot of my friends see the number 13, but read it 31. We spent time this week working on that as well! |
ELAIt has been so much fun for us to read & discuss the books I've picked to read aloud this week!
On Wednesday, I read aloud "Personal Space Camp" to get my 1st (& 4 new 2nd graders) thinking about how much personal space they need to feel comfortable & how to be respectful of other students' space. This skill is especially handy during morning meeting & calendar time! On Thursday, I read aloud "My Mouth is a Volcano" to get my students to realize that interrupting makes people upset. We talked about ways to conduct ourselves when we're really excited to share a story or great news, but someone else is talking. * Bite down, take a deep breath in, swallow those words, share the news at a better time (or when it's your turn). On Friday, I will read aloud "A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue" to help distinguish the differences between tattling and reporting. We will focus on the skills necessary in conflict resolution and minding our own business in order to be great friends. |
Procedures! We have spent so much time this week practicing procedures & getting into the routine of our days here in room 105. In order to maximize my instruction time & their learning time, it is so important that every student knows where to place or retrieve supplies, how to enter & exit the classroom, lunchroom, playground, and specials classrooms. Be sure to discuss & initial your child's behavior color sheet daily. The best behaviors shine when positive behaviors in the classroom are reinforced at home.
We are off to a fantastic start! I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of my students. Thank you for sharing your special children with me. We are going to be great partners in their education and leadership goals. |
